What is Physical Therapy (PT)?

It's the treatment of injury or condition by physical methods such as muscle and joint manipulation, heat treatment, and targeted exercises. By physically addressing underlying issues of a condition, physical therapy often leads to permanent or long-term pain relief without drugs or surgery. If surgery is needed, PT is almost always used post-operatively to reduce swelling, increase active and passive range of motion and increase strength and endurance.

What is Dry Needling (DN)?

Dry needling (DN) is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points (TrPs). TrPs are hyperirritable spots within a taut band of muscle fibers that produce local and/or referred pain when stimulated. Dry needling is an effective, drug free technique used to safely treat acute or chronic restrictions in movement and/or pain. Both Borealis practitioners Julie Merrill, PT, and Rich Woolley, DC, offer dry needling.
